My name is Susan Fisher, physical therapist at In Motion physical therapy in Downingtown PA Many parents don’t realize that physical therapy is an option for their child’s post-concussion treatment. However, physical therapy can offer a number of benefits during the recovery process. Post-concussion rehab with begin with a thorough evaluation of cognitive, physical, and neurological function enabling the physical therapist to develop an individualized plan for each child based on the findings. The plan of care will follow a 5 stage protocol that is based on symptom provocation during exercise in each stage. The child will progress through each stage as symptoms allow. Exercises will be specific to each child, but will include postural strengthening, aerobic training, full body strengthening as well as agility, plyometric, and balance training. These exercises will help improve balance, hand eye coordination, reaction speed, speed of cognitive processing, and will promote improved brain function post-concussion in order to enable return to school, social, and sporting activities. If you think your child would benefit from an post-concussion evaluation, or have questions, please contact In Motion Physical therapy for further information.
